Superintedent's Update: Return to School Plan
Good evening, Wicomico school families and staff. This is Donna Hanlin, Superintendent of Wicomico County Public Schools, with an update on our Return to School Action Plan following today’s school return announcement by the Governor and State Superintendent of Schools.
State health and education officials have just shared adjusted guidance for school systems, along with additional research indicating that it is possible to have schools safely open for students. Today the Governor urged school systems to make immediate plans to phase in hybrid in-person learning in schools no later than March 1st.
For a safe and orderly reopening, Wicomico students will return to our schools in stages, starting the week of February 2nd. We will do so with physical distancing, mask wearing and other important health and safety precautions for students and staff.
Here is our current return schedule:
Week of February 2nd: Hybrid in-person instruction resumes for students who were in schools last fall in small groups or in grades Prekindergarten to 2nd Grade. Teachers and other school staff members serving these students will be back in school buildings as of January 25th.
Week of February 8th: Hybrid in-person instruction begins for grades 3-8. Teachers and other school staff members serving these students will be back in school buildings as of February 1st.
Week of February 16th: Hybrid in-person instruction begins for grades 9-12. Teachers and other school staff members serving these students will be back in school buildings as of February 8th.
Fully virtual learning will continue to be an option this school year for students in all grade levels, and many of our students and parents have chosen this option. Parents who had previously committed to the virtual option for a student and now wish to change to the hybrid option should communicate with the school. The school will work with the family on the request.
Today we were pleased to have two of our dedicated staff members from Wicomico High School, Principal Ron Greene and Guidance Counselor Donyelle Cottingham, join other education staff from around the state to receive their first dose of the vaccine along with the State Superintendent of Schools. Whether to receive the vaccine is a personal choice, but we encourage staff members to consider getting vaccinated for enhanced protection from COVID-19 for themselves and the people with whom they live, work and interact. Some of our employees have already received the first dose, and more will do so as appointments become available.
It will be the responsibility of each and every one of us to continue to help stop the spread of COVID-19 in our community. This dangerous pandemic is not over yet. Please do everything you can so we can come through this public health crisis as soon as possible and as safely as possible. Have a good night.
